Charley relates, “For the last 25 years plus of my mainstream, secular radio career, I was what those within the industry refer to as a ‘morning man.’ I had risen to the status of getting up every morning at 3:45 to be able to get to the station in time to thrill, inform and entertain all those listeners getting up to start their day. “Morning shows” on the radio are the most high profile day parts. It is the time of day that most everybody listens for whatever reason, even it’s just to find out what the weather is supposed to be for the day, so consequently, most radio station managers and programmers try to put their best people on in the morning to provide a compelling, informative, entertaining product. And those who are the presenters, or performers, are often rewarded with a very substantial salary and also very often become way too big for their own britches. They are treated as ‘stars’ and tend to believe it.” In “The Fantasy of Self-importance and Self-confidence,” our veteran broadcaster shares his own experience and shows us how to avoid these traps in our lives.
